Good day All
With the 2016 Rio Olympics done and dusted and those athletes back home, let not forget about the Paralympians… They also excel in their sport and have earned our support same as their counterparts – able-bodied athletes.
So let’s follow their 2016 Rio-journey in the same way – from 7 to 18 September 2016.

I "borrowed" the following article from the SASCOC 2016 Paralympics webpage...

Team South Africa named for 2016 Rio Paralympics

·
·         Updated: July 19, 2016
SASCOC has announced a star-studded team to represent South Africa at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio De Janeiro from 7-18 September.
The announcement was made at the Nedbank Head Office in Johannesburg on Tuesday 19 July at a glittering occasion where the names of the honoured 45 athletes were revealed to the nation.
The squad will be spread over 10 different codes, namely: archery, athletics, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, powerlifting, rowing, swimming, shooting and wheelchair tennis.
As was the case at the previous Paralympic Games in London, where Team South Africa was represented by seven codes, the athletics code will have the strongest representation of 19 athletes, followed by swimming and cycling, both with six competitors.
The team is a blend of stars who have medalled in various international events and have done South Africa proud on the international scenes as well.
Multi-talented Ernst van Dyk will be back for an incredible seventh successive seventh Paralympic Games after first having represented South Africa at Barcelona, 1992. He has competed in three disciplines, athletics, cycling and swimming. Fellow athlete Zanele Situ will be competing in her fifth Paralympics.
Among the London medallists heading for Rio will be athletes Ilse Carstens (nee Hayes), Anrune Liebenberg, Dyan Buis, Arnu Fourie, Hilton Langenhoven, Jonathan Ntutu and Union Sekailwe, Fanie van der Merwe and Van Dyk. Teenage double-leg amputee Ntando Mahlangu is also part of the track and field squad.
Of the six swimmers, four won medals in London – Shireen Sapiro, Achmat Hassiem, Hendri Herbst and Kevin Paul. Paul, who trains under national swimming coach Graham Hill in Pinetown, KZN, has been part of the SA Olympic swim squad as he prepares for Rio. Newcomer to the swim squad is Pietermaritzburg’s Alani Ferreira who qualified four times during national championships earlier this year.
Another Paralympian veteran will be equestrian expert Philippa Johnson, who won double gold in Beijing eight years ago. This will be her fourth Paralympics.
Five codes feature just one athlete, namely archery (Shaun Anderson), canoeing (Graham Paull), equestrian (Johnson), powerlifting (Chantelle Stierman) and shooting (Von Zeuner Kohne). The first three mentioned are all Paralympic first-timers.
Stierman was part of Team South Africa at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland while Kohne shot for Team South Africa at two previous Paralympics.
The cycling code will include Van Dyk after he won silver in the road race at the London Paralympics while Dane Wilson and Roxy Burns will represent South Africa in the track events.
The rowing code doubles up it’s representation from one boat in London to two in Rio. Sandra Khumalo is back for her second Games in the ASWomen1X category and this time round there’s also a very competitive LTAMIX 4+ crew in action.
Tennis sees a team of four aces, three of them having been in London four years ago (KG Montjane, Lucas Sithole and Evans Maripa) while Leon Els will be a Paralympic debutant.
SASCOC CEO, Mr Tubby Reddy said: “Our Paralympians have always done us proud at previous games and South Africa has a track record of excellent results evidenced by obtaining a total of 29 medals in London in 2012. I have no doubt that this team will maintain this standard and even do better in Rio.”
Congratulating the team, SASCOC President, Gideon Sam added: ‘When it comes to delivery for South African sporting glory our Paralympic aces have always put their hands up. I see Rio as being no different and we will be building on an amazing legacy left by the previous generation. Since readmission to international sport our Paralympians have only once failed to bring back less than a double-figure medal tally and that was way back in 1992.
“We will once again be looking to this excellent blend of experience and youth to bring back more honour to South Africa. Go and represent your country to the very best of your ability and be the best ambassadors possible.”
Another highlight of the Paralympic team announcement was the unveiling of the revamped Chukuru, the national Olympic and Paralympic mascot who has also been getting ready for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. And let it be known, he is looking lean and mean and up for any sporting challenge.
SASCOC extended their heartfelt gratitude to the extremely patriotic Paralympic sponsors: Sasol, 361, Nedbank, South African Airways, Sports and Recreation South Africa, Telkom and the National Lotteries Commission for all their contributions in making Team SA’s participation a success.

#Olympics_2016 - South African Athletes

If I may add my 10c worth and jump on the #WaydevanNiekerk bandwagon...

How amazing to see a South African athlete excel and reach what must be the ultimate goal! As a Nation we can surely stand proud and keep cheering for such an achievement.

But let us not forget the silver and bronze medalists at the #Rio2016 Olympics as they also worked extremely hard and our country on the (Sports) world map... And the whole #SA_OlympicTeam that represented..... They were chosen because they were (hopefully) the best our Country had to offer! So well done to all of them!

#Proudly_SouthAfrican

Raising 3 kids in a world ridden with acts of violence and crime, drug abuse, political turmoil and so much more; it is important for me to not only have my faith/religion and a Higher Power to trust upon, but also people who my kids could aspire to be like. As their parent I should be one of those people too ☺ I know; but it is important for them to also know there are others who make the most of their God-given talents and that if you work hard, you can achieve your goals in life no matter all the obstacles you might have to endure.

Let's give our kids more to stay motivated!

Till next time.

Dale Lakay - 1st ever rugby game

#Rugby!!!!!!

These pictures were taken yesterday (01 June 2016) when Dale had his very first official rugby match… - under 7 School team.

What a blast!!

With the boys (on same side) fighting for the ball and forgetting to pass it to the back and throwing it forward as soon as it seems the opponents will tackle them… ☺
Dale at one point forgetting he’s still in the game and standing with his hand in his pocket for a minute – till I shouted “Dale, play!!!” and another boy running off the field to go get something in his bag…

The other team was definitely more organised and knew more about the game then “our” side but they still could not win… with each team scoring 1 try. I spoke to the coach during the game and she was saying how frustrating it was to watch them doing almost everything that they were told the other way around...

And Dale afterwards saying “They were playing Rough!” but he clearly enjoyed it.

Dale Lance Lakay... (1)

Dale Lance Lakay - (13/01/2009)...

"IT MADE ME VERY HAPPY"

Five words that brought so much joy in my heart ♥... Why? You may ask...

Those were the words uttered by my 7-year old son, Dale, on Monday, 16 May 2016 after his very first ever RUGBY practice at school. Words that brought tears to my eyes - and made me miss my dear dad even more as he would've been so happy to hear Dale say it and so proud.

He came home and the excitement could not be contained! He wanted to share the experience with all of us immediately. The fact that he went to rugby practice to keep him out of trouble (my decision supported by his principle, Mrs Du Toit @Labiance Primary School), was obviously "forgotten" for that moment! ☺

After he told his story, he walked away from me with that simple and very demure statement "it made me very happy" and I couldn't be happier!

One day I hope to look back on this day and be thankful for the insight to let him start on this journey. No matter how far he takes it... for now I could assist him in finding something he could be truly passionate about... and I'm so grateful!

Supporting your child...

I again realized the importance of supporting your child in their dreams and interests they show; and to give recognition to their talents.

My eldest son, Xavier has a natural talent for athletics. He made it clear several times that it is important to him to have me there - encouraging him and just be there in the crowd somewhere. So although I am a working mother, I do my best to attend all or most of his athletic events and he really has appreciation for my presence.

And of course as a parent, when your child excels in life, it is like you're solely responsible for those achievements the way you boast and beam with pride. ☺
That is how I experience it anyway....

This year with the school athletics, he again went just further than the interschool level and was highly disappointed when he didn't make it past that level/stage.

January 2016 (1)

2016 started out busy and I suppose the pace will be fast all year round...

I did not have much time to check in on the blog the last few months but until I can do more and find more time; it will be short and hopefully sweet posts... ☺

So.... December 2015... Festive Season was not so festive as some bad news clouded the festive mood; although there were much to celebrate... wedding anniversaries... birthdays (my sister, uncle and me)... Christmas, New Year.... it was calm celebrations...

Well... my colleagues did try to make my birthday a fun day although I had to celebrate it with them a week early to accommodate those going on leave.

My middle child started school (Grade 1) on his birthday... with a foot that sustained a burn wound :(
... luckily that has healed well...

My baby started crèche and after 2 days she had enough... she had a few health issues over the last 2 months but is already much better.

My eldest had athletics early on in the year and already mentioned he wants to do extremely well this year...

This picture explains my kids perfectly!

Anyway...

All the best to you for 2016! May each and every day be a blessing to you... There are so many who are not so privileged to experience another day... so although it may seem small; be grateful for the blessings!

Mwah!

Train stories....

I suppose there are many versions of this story that did the rounds today but this is mine…

Travelling by train in Cape Town can be a nightmare at times… but I also many times see so many funny things happening, that I forget about the bad times – always better to laugh right!!

This morning, however, was chaos! Got into a train where people were praising and worshiping and it was all lively… that is the middle part of the carriage where my cousin and I stood; a bit close to the door which was on my left. After travelling for about 20 minutes however, total chaos erupted on the other side (to my left) and the first thing on my mind was that people are probably fighting and that concerned me greatly as the doors were open and I would have hated to see or know someone fell out of a moving train and possibly land under the wheels!! So I already panicked… Then one lady came running from the other side but when I asked her what was going on, she didn't even know but she was even more frantic, panicking and scared!

My cousin was sitting and I stood in front of her when I noticed that a guy was kind of “hanging” in the air as his booted feet were dangling and I knew he was obviously holding on to the handrails above and shortly thereafter people started getting onto the seats/benches! And the next thought… “SNAKE!!” and that got me onto that bench very quickly… heart racing but also realizing this could just be a scare tactic by some idiot… so I said it out loud to no one in particular that I’ve heard robbers do that because when people are scared, they don’t worry about their bags as much or are not as careful as they would have been… so holding my bag tighter as well!

The praise and worship team tried with not much success to continue their preaching and singing but people were no longer paying attention as they tried to get out of the way of the “snake”! Others were more interested in the reaction of those who were so scared and took their smartphones to record all of us stupid enough to believe there could be a snake…

Although I normally try to see the funny side of things, it took me a while to manage a smile!

What actually happened I will probably never know for sure… the preachers went on about it being the devil operating to prevent the gospel being preached. Others were of the opinion that it was a (TIK) Meth-addict who hallucinated and just seeing things…

An elderly lady had this to say though…

A young lady was apparently standing with her back against the wall and felt something walking over her shoulder, then across her chest and hit it away after getting a fright. They thought it must have been a gecko and that was mistaken for being the “snake”!

Well, whatever the truth, I can definitely not complain about being bored on the trains all the time!
However, be careful when travelling by train (or any other transportation) this Festive Season... Some shady characters working extra hard and doing their Christmas shopping out of your bag...!!!
